Making of
Is this love
Originally composed by David Coverdale & John Sykes (White Snakes) in 1987. We got the inspiration for our adaptation from them for their live TV version Unplugged, although we have “tweaked” it a bit.
Tango
Composed by Dianne Reeves in 2004. Our arrangement is inspired by the Tango Du Jour version | International Jazz Day 2013. Special mention should be made of the work of Hüsnü Şenlendirici on Clarinet and Bilal Karaman on Guitar apart from the style of Dianne Reeves. Those influences are felt in our version.
Mirando al mar
Composed by Jorge Sepúlveda in 1949, it is the song we do in memory of our elders. As a child it was one of the melodies that always sounded at home. The arrangement is not inspired by any known version, we decided to make it and it came out just like it sounds.
Lullaby of Birdland
Composed in 1952 by George Shearing and George David Weiss, it is today a renowned Jazz Standard dedicated to Charlie Parker and the New York Jazz club “Birdland”. Our arrangement is inspired by Lydia Harrell’s version.
What are you doing the rest of your life
Composed in 1969 by MIchel Legrand and lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the film “The happy End”. We got to know the subject from Shirley Bassey. Our arrangement is not based on any version and is recorded in real time, vocals and guitar played together and “Ad Libitum” without any “Tempo” markings.
Esta tarde vi llover
Composed in 1966 by Armando Manzanero, it is considered the best song in Latin music between 1920 and 2015 according to Billboard magazine. It is a “Made in Home” arrangement, in which we introduce the “Fantasy” concept. In the introduction the initial melody sounds over a reduced harmony, on the other hand in the central acoustic guitar solo the harmony is the original but the melody changes, and finally the climax based on crossed improvisations of guitar and voice on a simple but curious harmonic base IMaj7, II-7, bII7 / V.
Song for my father
Composed in 1964 by Horace Silver. Our version is based on the combination of the Covers of two different characters from the Jazz scene. On the one hand, the version that Dee Dee Bridgewater did in 1995 in her album dedicated to Horace Silver and on the other, the version of Larry Coryell that appears in European Impressions of 1978. The two together have been like this …!
Ave María
Composed in 1825 by Franz Schubert. We have based our arrangement on the version performed by Eric Johnson (guitar) with Lori Stinson (Soprano) on the Album “Angelica” in 1997, entirely devoted to classical works with arrangements and nuances “Rock”. For our part, we have pushed a bit in the direction of “Neoclassical” perhaps something more “Heavy”, in combination with an absolute lyricism in Neus’ voice.
The look of love
Composed in 1966 by Burt Bacharach, Hal David added lyrics a year later. We were inspired to hear him sing by Laura Simó in the work he did in 2015 with arrangements by Lorenzo Barrientos “Close to you”. Our version is based on that but in a guitar and voice duo.
No more blues
Composed in 1958 by Antonio Carlos Jobim and lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes. Another “Made in Home” arrangement with a Samba base made with sequencers but no bass … the only bass that can be heard is the low strings of the acoustic guitar.
On the sunny side of the street
Composed in 1930 by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Inspired by Esperanza Spalding we decided to make an arrangement with the spirit of Swing and that is what has remained, but in a guitar and voice duo. The part of the solo “Scat” is designed for the Big Band in such a way that the notes are rhythmically intertwined with the base syncopations.
You don’t know what love is
Composed in 1941 by Gene de Paul, lyrics by Don Raye and initially sung by Dinah Washington. As hypnotized by its notes and harmonies, we have listened to all the versions that we have found on the net and dragged by the Tsunami of enthusiasm we have written this arrangement “Made in home” of which finally little has remained of the original composition.
Dedications
We dedicate this “First Opera” in the first place to our elders who are no longer here but who would have loved to meet him and listen to him because of his great love of music, the theme “Mirando al mar” is specially dedicated to them.
Of course, our children, the next generation also involved in music: Eric, Yeray and Nuria, our brothers Tere, José Ramón and Jessi, Santi and Susana, Elsa, Jordi and Enric, Anto and Pepe, Isabel and Juan, Isabel and Salva, Paco, Rosi and Laura.
